Vox Phantom
The Phantom guitar made by the Vox company is distinguishable by its unique and special design. The shape of the Phantom guitar range, from the first model to the later 12 string and bass models was one of the main selling points of the guitar and has made it one of the most recognizable instruments in the world.
The first Phantom was designed to be similar to other popular guitars of the time and follows the same design principles as models such as the Fender and Gibson ranges. It was not until the Phantom Mk3 was launched that the now famous Teardrop design was used and the Vox company was launched into high popularity all over the world. The stars and music bands of the time such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones were among the first people to use the teardrop style guitar and make it famous.
Later, there was a 12 string version called the Phantom XII, a bass model made to order and featuring the signature of the Stones bass player, Bill Wyman and the Vox Super Lynx deluxe, with probably owes more to the design skills of Gibson than any of the other Vox guitars produced.
The Vox range of guitars are made from Maple wood with rose wood fretboards which is common for nearly all electric guitars made over the last 60 years or so. The Vox guitars were not solid body guitars though and featured a slightly hollow body which allowed the instrument a better sustain and a unique sound. The Vox guitars nearly all feature twin pickups, a 3 way selector switch, single tone and volume controls and a brass neck and tuning pegs.
