Throughout his short career (and life) Marc Bolan of T-Rex fame played various different guitars. His Gibson Flying V guitar was sold for over $70k at auction by Christies in 2007 - but the other guitar Bolan is famous for is his orange Gibson Les Paul.
There is quite a mystery surrounding this guitar as it seems to change through the years and feature many different necks. It is known that at some point the neck was broken by Bolan and it was replaced with a custom design by the Gibson factory but there is also images that show the neck with rectangle shaped fret markers, missing fret markers and also parallelogram shaped inlays too.
The actual guitar itself is a Gibson Les Paul, made between 1958 and 1960 and is known as a Gibson Burst due to the cherry red sunburst coloring. The guitar used by Marc Bolan is an orange color, also known as a Honey Burst.
The real guitar was stolen from the back of Bolan's van after a gig and was never seen again. Gibson have so far not released a replica or signature version of this guitar, although a very good custom made replica has recently turned up on eBay which is as close to the original as you can get.
